Here's a baby goldfinch (not so good quality though)






This goldfinch doesn't look too impressed with the interloper

Birds

The GSW has been around a bit more recently. I even saw him on the bird table and dropped to the floor to crawl to the window and peep over the sill.
He was also chasing other birds off the seeds on the slab. He's a very strange moving bird.


I am getting lots of sparrows down this corner of the garden. Definitely at least 3 male and I'm not sure if some of these are fledglings as well as females

The magpies have been after the fat recently

The jackdaws are so funny trying to pick the seeds up off the flat slabs. Their beaks are too big.

This goldie looks soooooooo fat.

Yet Another Feeder

Not another feeder !!!!!
It wasn't long til someone came along. And the blackbird enjoyed the droppings.

I don't think he's quite got it right

A busy day in the garden today. The birds must be anticipating the cold snap on it's way.
I counted 8 goldfinches today and took a few pics.

I love the way they look down to see when they will be able to get a perch.

The starlings returned. I'm not sure which of these 2 pics I like the best. The lower one looks well snug in the fir tree.

The finches really didn't like the middle seeds in the feeder

It got a bit windy today and twice the robin got blown away. So funny

The long tailed tits were about quite a bit today

And I was pleased to see (and photograph badly) the great spotted woodpecker. He was partial to the fat cake that's away from in front of the window. The black cap also liked that cake.

So it's giving big snow for tomorrow. Hopefully it will be so big I can't go to work and I can sit in the window and take photos of birds in the snow.

The Morning After The Night Before

Wow, was it windy last night. I'd looked out the window and saw the candle on the floor, but then when I went downstairs to look out the window, I could see that it wasn't the only casualty.
The nut feeder was on the ground a long way from the tree and also the nyger feeder with tray had fallen and somehow the tray had cracked a bit of plastic and the bottom came off the feeder with the seed almost spilling out. So I had to go out and rescue everything. I brought the nyger in to dry and see if I could recover it (I did) and popped the big seed feeder onto a lower branch. because the tree is really a wild bush, it doesn't half sway in the winds which is why the feeders all fell off. Also, the cheap square nyger feeder that I had only filled on Friday was absolutely empty.

So this morning before going out to sort the feeders out again, the siskins were all over the floor and the goldfinches were happy on this feeder.

Hehe, I snapped the robin before he spotted me.

And the collared doves are starting to come close to the house again. For the past few months, they haven't come close (that I have seen) but this last week or so, they've been regulars

New Year

I haven't posted a bit as I've been away for Christmas time and New Year, but I'd taken these pics just before Christmas and so here are a few

The gold finches are regulars now. In fact I moved this feeder so next door could enjoy them while I was away.

The robin is still elusive. Mind you, I was out the back today stocking up and he flew up looked at me and flew off

Goldfinches

It was quiet in my garden yesterday, but I refilled a few feeders and moved the nyger feeder so I may see it a bit better. I looked out the upstairs window and saw 4 goldfinches, wow, I was well impressed but couldn't get a good photo. I posted about this on the GBS forum and as I was doing so, I could see there were a few on the feeder outside the window. I sneaked closer and counted 6. Managed a few photos. Later on I was trying to take a photo showing how close everything is to the window and say the goldies again. I kept losing count as there were just too many. I counted 8, 6 on the one tree near the nyger feeder and 2 on the other tree. Wow. And they visited quite a few times during the day, although not more than 4 at a time after that.
